Bracing

Did you know that the term “orthotic” comes from the Greek word “ortho”, which means to straighten or align?

While most people associate orthotics with the feet only, the word can be used to define devices made to support or align any part of the body. So, as orthotists, we also specialise in the fitting and manufacturing of a wide range of braces for the upper and lower body.

Why would someone be
Prescribed a Brace?

Usually, a brace is fitted to a joint or body segment for the purposes of:

  • Preventing an injury
  • Aiding rehabilitation after an injury
  • Controlling, limiting or immobilising one or more joints of the body
  • Reducing pain caused by particular joint movements
  • Assisting movement
  • Correcting the shape and function of body segments

What braces
Are Available?

The Orthotic Clinic can fit prefabricated or fully custom-made braces made from a variety of materials. Some of the more commonly prescribed braces include ankle, knee, wrist, finger/hand, elbow, neck and shoulder braces. Rigid spinal bracing and corsets are also available.
